Watch: Drone delivers first Amazon parcels in UK
Amazon launches UK's first drone delivery service in Darlington, County Durham, with plans for rapid expansion.

Amazon has made history by becoming the first retailer in the UK to launch a drone delivery service. The limited launch, which began in Darlington, County Durham, allows customers to receive packages weighing less than 5lb (2.2kg) within a 7.5 mile (12km) radius of Amazon's fulfilment centre in as little as two hours. The tech giant claims it can carry out a maximum of ten flights an hour, or up to a hundred deliveries a day on weekdays, as part of its initial trial.
While the service is still in its infancy, Amazon hopes to slowly expand it as demand for ultra-fast deliveries grows. While drones are already being used by the NHS to deliver blood supplies in London and by Royal Mail to send packages to remote communities in Orkney, this marks the first time the technology has been used for everyday shopping. Darlington is currently the only location outside the US where Amazon is conducting drone deliveries.
The company is expected to continue testing and refining its drone delivery service in the coming weeks and months. Amazon's drone delivery service is a significant milestone in the development of rapid delivery technology, and it will be closely watched by industry experts and consumers alike. The use of drones for delivery purposes is gaining traction, with other companies and organizations already exploring the potential benefits of this technology.
