American Airlines Picks SpaceX's Starlink for In-Flight Wi-Fi
American Airlines to install Starlink on over 500 Airbus aircraft, marking another win for SpaceX's satellite communications unit ahead of its IPO.

American Airlines announced on Tuesday that it will install SpaceX's Starlink on more than 500 narrow-body Airbus aircraft, starting early next year. This deal marks the latest carrier to choose the SpaceX unit for in-flight Wi-Fi service, providing a significant boost to Starlink's growing list of clients. The partnership not only brings financial benefits to Starlink, the satellite communications network and sole SpaceX business unit generating substantial revenue, but also gives SpaceX an edge over competitors like Amazon's Leo and legacy providers such as Viasat.
Starlink's satellites operate in low Earth orbit, offering broadband internet to consumers and enterprise customers, including airlines like American Airlines. This contract follows a string of successful partnerships with major airlines and cruise operators. United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa Group, British Airways, and Alaska Airlines have already equipped some of their aircraft with Starlink, according to SpaceX's IPO registration filing released last week.
Although not all of American Airlines' aircraft will be upgraded, the airline's new Airbus A321XLR and A320neo aircraft will be equipped with Starlink, with its Boeing aircraft excluded from the agreement. The deal provides another positive momentum for SpaceX as it prepares for its highly anticipated initial public offering next month, projected to be the largest in history. As the company continues to secure contracts with major airlines, Starlink's prospects for growth and profitability are looking increasingly promising.
The selection of Starlink by American Airlines underscores the growing demand for high-speed internet connectivity in the aviation industry. As travelers increasingly rely on in-flight Wi-Fi for entertainment, productivity, and communication, airlines are seeking reliable and efficient solutions to meet this demand. With this latest win, SpaceX's Starlink is poised to further expand its presence in the in-flight Wi-Fi market, solidifying its position as a leading provider of satellite-based internet services.
