Character.AI ventures into microdrama production with interactive twist
Character.AI launches microdramas with interactive chat feature, allowing users to engage with AI characters and influence storylines.

Microdramas are a growing trend in the attention economy, with companies like TikTok, Instagram, Peacock, and Amazon Prime creating their own products to tap into the opportunity. Character.AI, a platform that allows users to chat with customized AI avatars, is also entering the microdrama market with its own productions. The company's microdramas will feature AI characters, and users over 18 can chat with these characters, ask questions, and even roleplay different storylines.
Character.AI is launching three microdramas initially: 'Last Summer' (a romance series), 'The Nighttime Game' (a horror show), and 'Eden Fall' (a survival microdrama similar to The Hunger Games). Character.AI's microdramas are created using AI production tools, and the company aims to eventually allow users to create their own characters and series. 'Starting with a studio-led model, c.ai Series lets our production team develop the format, refine the workflow, and understand what audiences want from Character-native Microdrama entertainment.
Over time, the goal is to turn those learnings and workflows into creator tools, enabling users to make their own series from original Characters and share them with a global audience,' a company spokesperson told TechCrunch. This move is part of Character.AI's shift toward entertainment-focused features, following the introduction of Lorebook and Books last year. The company is also testing a feature called c.ai FM, which allows users to create audio series, and another feature called c.ai Reads, which enables users to create fiction.
The audio series feature is currently available to select users under the experimental c.ai Labs program, with professional writers using it to create serialized audio dramas. Users spent more than 950 minutes on Character.AI each month in the first half of 2026, according to Sensor Tower. Why this matters: Character.AI's foray into microdrama production marks a significant expansion of its interactive entertainment offerings.
By allowing users to engage with AI characters and influence storylines, the company is creating a new level of immersion and interactivity. This could have broader implications for the entertainment industry, as companies increasingly look to leverage AI and user-generated content to create more engaging experiences. For developers and businesses, Character.AI's approach could provide a model for creating interactive content that resonates with audiences.
However, questions remain about the long-term viability of microdrama as a format, and whether Character.AI's interactive twist will be enough to sustain user interest over time.
