How I customized YouTube to limit distractions and protect my privacy
A writer shares 12 YouTube settings to enhance user experience, limit distractions, and protect privacy.

YouTube is an excellent platform for learning new skills, staying updated on news, finding recipes, or simply enjoying favorite celebrities. However, the default experience can be overwhelming, noisy, and intrusive. By adjusting a few settings, users can significantly improve their YouTube experience.
I've made several changes to my YouTube settings to limit distractions and protect my privacy. Firstly, I attempted to disable YouTube Shorts entirely but was unable to do so. However, I can set a daily limit for Shorts in the mobile app by going to Profile > Settings > Time management > Shorts feed limit > 0.
This limit can be easily dismissed, but it may be helpful if children use the same device. To reduce Shorts recommendations, I tap the three-dot menu in the Shorts shelf on the Home screen and select 'Show fewer Shorts.' I also disable autoplay entirely while watching videos by looking for the autoplay toggle near the top or bottom of the video player. On mobile, autoplay can be disabled directly from Settings by going to Profile > Settings > Playback, then turning off 'Autoplay next video.' Video previews can be distracting and burn through data on mobile devices.
To disable them, I go to Profile > Settings > Playback > Playback in feeds, then select 'Off.' Alternatively, I can choose 'Wi-Fi only' for a more balanced approach. The YouTube mobile app offers more settings than the desktop version, including video quality preferences. I set permanent defaults for video and audio quality by going to Profile > Settings > Video quality preferences.
I use 'Data saver' on mobile networks and 'Higher picture quality' on Wi-Fi. I also prefer to set audio quality to 'Higher' in the same menu, which requires a paid YouTube Premium subscription. For video tutorials, I like to watch at 1.25x or 1.5x speed.
To adjust playback speed, I go to Settings > Playback speed and choose a rate. I also enable subtitles to ensure I don't miss anything. To prevent YouTube from disrupting my sleep, I set a sleep timer.
I open a video, go to Settings > Sleep timer, and choose a duration. YouTube will automatically pause the video when the timer ends. I enable ambient mode for a more visually appealing experience.
To use it, I must enable Dark theme under Settings > General > Appearance. Then, I open any video, select Settings > More > Ambient mode, and switch it on. Notification overload is a common issue for me.
To reduce notifications, I go to Profile > Settings > Notifications and turn off notifications on both mobile and desktop. I also auto-delete older activity to maintain my privacy. I open Google My Activity > YouTube History > Manage history > Auto-delete, then choose a duration.
