Google Bets on Gemini AI to Reinvent Smart Home Speaker
Google introduces $99.99 Google Home Speaker with Gemini AI for natural language requests and multi-step commands.

Google is betting that its Gemini AI can reinvent its smart speaker, introducing the $99.99 Google Home Speaker, the company's first audio device built specifically for Gemini. The new device is the first standalone smart speaker from Google since the Nest Audio in September 2020. The Google Home Speaker allows users to speak using natural language requests and make multi-step requests without having to phrase commands correctly.
For example, users can tell the speaker to 'turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp,' or 'dim the kitchen lights, play some relaxing music, and set a timer for 20 minutes.' The device also allows for corrections mid-sentence and understands natural language, enabling users to make changes to their requests without having to restart. Additionally, the speaker comes with 10 new voices that can have two-way conversations on various topics beyond smart home tasks. The device's design is similar to older versions, with a 3D-knit textile wrapping and rounded 3.4 x 4.2-inch design.
It will be available in various colors, including Jade and Berry in the U.S. A new ring light at the bottom indicates if the speaker is listening, thinking, or responding. Google will offer Google Home Premium subscription plans for $10 per month (or $100 per year) for more powerful AI features, including free-flowing conversations with Gemini Live and summaries of activity captured on Nest cameras.
The premium features will be available for free for six months before users are prompted to subscribe. The device is available for pre-order now and will ship later this month. Why this matters: The Google Home Speaker's integration with Gemini AI marks a significant shift in the smart speaker market, enabling more natural and intuitive interactions.
For developers, this could mean new opportunities for creating AI-powered smart home applications. For businesses, the success of Google's premium subscription model could set a precedent for monetizing AI-enhanced features. For consumers, the device offers a more seamless and interactive smart home experience.
However, questions remain about the adoption rate of the premium features and the potential for competition from other tech giants. As the smart speaker market continues to evolve, Google's bet on Gemini AI could pay off, but it also carries risks if users are not willing to pay for advanced features.
