OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman has officially taken charge of the company's product strategy, according to a report by Wired. This move appears to be a formalization of an existing change, as Brockman had already been overseeing OpenAI's products on an interim basis while CEO Fidji Simo was out on medical leave. Brockman outlined the company's plans in a staff memo, revealing that OpenAI aims to combine its popular chatbot ChatGPT with its programming product Codex into a single, unified experience.
"We're consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise," Brockman reportedly said. The changes have been made in collaboration with Simo, who remains on medical leave. According to OpenAI, the company has been exploring plans to integrate ChatGPT, Codex, and its API into a single platform with one core product team.
This shift in focus comes after CEO Sam Altman declared a "code red" at the end of last year, urging the company to refocus on the core ChatGPT experience. As a result of this renewed focus, OpenAI has reportedly halted development on certain "side quests," including the video generator Sora and OpenAI for Science. With Brockman now at the helm of product strategy, it's clear that OpenAI is prioritizing a more streamlined approach to its products.
The company has confirmed that Simo worked with Brockman on these changes, despite being on medical leave. OpenAI's decision to consolidate its product efforts suggests a renewed emphasis on delivering a cohesive, high-quality user experience across its offerings.
