OpenAI's Ambitious Bid to Create a 'Super App' with ChatGPT Overhaul

OpenAI is on the cusp of a significant transformation of its popular chatbot, ChatGPT. According to a report by the Financial Times, the company plans to roll out a revamped version of the platform in the coming weeks, positioning it as a 'super app' that integrates coding tools and AI agents. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering OpenAI's competitiveness, particularly among business customers, and paves the way for the company to achieve profitability before a potential initial public offering (IPO).

The revamp is part of OpenAI's broader effort to evolve ChatGPT from a simple chatbot into a gateway that leads free users to more advanced, paid products. One of these products is Codex, a coding tool that could benefit from the increased visibility. A senior OpenAI employee was quoted by the FT as saying, 'Chat is dead,' indicating a significant shift in the company's approach.

In March, The Wall Street Journal revealed that OpenAI's strategy had undergone a major shift. After launching several standalone products in 2025, the company now appears to be consolidating its efforts around ChatGPT. This means that some of its previous projects, such as the video generator Sora, are being set aside as the company focuses on its 'super app' vision.
