Slate Auto, the EV startup backed by Jeff Bezos, has built its business around simplicity and customization. The company offers a $24,950 unpainted gray electric truck with 205 miles of range, allowing buyers to customize it with vehicle wraps, decals, lighting, and accessories. The vehicle wraps, printed vinyl film that can be applied without painting, are central to this strategy, with hundreds of colors and combinations available.
Slate is adding more options through a partnership with Crayola, offering five vehicle wraps in signature Crayola colors: Cerulean, Fern, Jersey Tomato, Razzmatazz, and Dandelion. These Crayola-color vehicle wraps cost $1,549.99. Buyers who opt for a Crayola-colored vehicle wrap will receive a matching Crayola key fob and “Slatelet,” custom art pieces that snap onto the dashboard.
This collaboration marks Crayola's first automotive partnership, according to Anna Roca, head of global partnerships at Crayola. Slate Auto is also working with NYC artist Max Kolo on a vehicle wrap. The company remains tight-lipped about future collaborations, but a spokesperson hinted that more partnerships are in the works.
Slate Auto emerged from stealth in April 2025 and has yet to make its first deliveries. The company started taking preorders for its vehicle last month, which starts as a two-seat truck and can be modified into a more expensive $29,950 five-seater SUV. Why this matters: Slate Auto's partnership with Crayola highlights the growing importance of customization in the EV market.
By offering unique and colorful vehicle wraps, Slate Auto is differentiating itself from competitors and appealing to customers who value self-expression. This collaboration also marks a new frontier for Crayola, which is exploring ways to bring its brand to new audiences. As the EV market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how other manufacturers respond to Slate Auto's customization-focused approach.
Will this strategy pay off for Slate Auto, and what implications might it have for the broader automotive industry? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: Slate Auto is betting big on customization, and Crayola is along for the ride.
